Outdoor fun and a paycheck too!Spend the summer on the scenic shores of Seneca Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region of Western New York. Camp Whitman is licensed by the New York State Department of Health, and is inspected twice yearly.

Aquatic Director

Minimum qualifications:

  1. Minimum of 21 years of age & a High School graduate or equivalent.
  2. Experience in working with children and youth and/or experience working with people with developmental disabilities.
  3. 3 years of experience in a waterfront position.
  4. Current Lifeguard with Waterfront, CPR, First Aid and Water Safety Instructor certifications.
  5. Knowledge of pool and waterfront management.
  6. Ability to give and accept guidance and supervision and perform as a team leader.
  7. Ability to schedule and supervise staff.
  8. Ability and desire to work with campers of varying ages, backgrounds, interests, and abilities.
  9. Physical stamina, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Set up pool, and waterfront areas during staff training.
  2. Train all camp staff in responsibilities for aquatic activities.
  3. Evaluate aquatic abilities of staff and campers.
  4. Lifeguards are expected to work the equivalent of an approximate 8 hour work day. The Aquatic Director is responsible for the scheduling and supervision of lifeguarding tasks, including breaks.
  5. Supervise all pool and waterfront activities.
  6. Work with others during special events (i.e. early morning swims & other special requests).
  7. Make determinations, in consultation with the Program Manager, whether pool and/or lake are safe for activity, when conditions warrant.
  8. Help campers adjust to waterfront and pool activities.
  9. Conduct daily checks of equipment in area for safety, cleanliness, and good repair; and train staff in use.
  10. Follow State guidelines to provide safe aquatic environment for campers.
  11. Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring their timely arrival.
  12. Conduct initial and end of season inventory, and be responsible for storing and keeping equipment in good condition.
  13. Serve as a good example to campers in personal language, appearance and health habits.
  14. Follow all camp policies and regulations as found in the Camp Whitman Procedures Manual.
  15. Maintain open and constructive communication with the entire Camp Staff.
  16. Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations.
  17. Communicate regularly with the Program Manager and the Camp Leadership Team to participate in general planning of all aquatic activities, and to identify and solve problems.

Camp Counselor

Minimum qualifications

  1. Minimum of 18 years of age and a High School graduate or equivalent
  2. A sincere commitment to the Christian faith and outdoor ministry
  3. Experience in working with children and youth and/or experience working with people with developmental disabilities.
  4. Desire to work with campers of varying ages, backgrounds, interests, and abilities.
  5. Good health that enables you to live and work in a rustic outdoor setting for eight weeks
  6. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  7. Ability to accept guidance and supervision

Job Responsiblilities

  1. Live with a group of campers (youth and adults with and without developmental disabilities) on a 24-hour basis and (with a co-counselor) provide supervision and behavior management in the living unit, at program areas, and in the dining hall.
  2. Take 2 hours of break time at the Program Manager’s discretion during daylight hours.
  3. Participate in general planning of camp activities with Program Manager, Weekly Volunteers, co-counselors, and camper input.
  4. Help design and lead activities for people of all abilities related to art, music, recreation, sports, team building, camping, nature exploration, swimming, and boating.
  5. Take primary responsibility for implementing the camp curriculum. This will involve sharing your faith journey and facilitating small group discussions and worship experiences.
  6. Relate to each camper to ensure their adjustment to camp and participation in camp activities. Encourage respectful, inclusive social interactions between campers.
  7. Assist with camper personal care as needed, including providing verbal prompts, instruction, and occasional hands-on assistance with dressing, toileting, showering and eating.
  8. Serve as a good example to campers in personal language, appearance and health habits.
  9. Follow all camp policies and regulations as found in the Camp Whitman Procedures Manual.
  10. Maintain open and constructive communication with the entire Camp Staff.
  11. Maintain good public relations with camper’s parents.
  12. Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations.

  4. Training and experience in waterfront activities.
  5. Have current Lifeguarding, Waterfront, CPR, and First Aid certifications. Water
  6. Safety Instructor certification is desired but not required.
  7. Good communication and teamwork skills.
  8. Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  9. Physical stamina, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.

  3. Assist with preparation of meals for individuals with special needs diets.
  4. Supervise the preparation of cookout orders and ice cream orders.
  5. Assist with the checking and storage of food deliveries.
  6. Assist with weekly inventory.
  7. Knowledge and safe use of all kitchen equipment.
  8. Responsible, along with other kitchen staff, to insure the cleanliness of the dining hall and kitchen area.
  9. Responsible for supporting the methods of food safety and preparation, food storage, and overall cleanliness of the kitchen as set forth by the Department of Health.

Nursing Coordinator/Medical Director

Minimum qualifications

  1. Currently Licensed Registered Nurse
  2. Have ability to recruit and supervise Summer Camp Nursing staff

  5. Be comfortable with children and young adults, as well as working with youth and adults with developmental disabilities youth and adult campers
Responsible to
Camp Director and Camp Operator/Geneva Presbytery Executive

Job Responsiblilities

  1. Recruit, interview, confirm hiring and schedule Registered Nurses for each camp week
  2. Appoint one Registered Nurse who will be in residence 24 hours per day to serve as the camp Health Director for each one week camp session
  3. Provide a listing of nurses when hired and week(s) scheduled to the Camp Director
  4. Review and revise medical section of camp Safety Manual(s) each spring
  5. Assist in preparing all health-related forms to be used during the camp season
  6. Prepare medication administration books, and insure that there are an adequate number of ACA Health Log books
  7. When they are received, review DD camper applications for appropriate meds and check for concerns. Applications must be reviewed by the Nurse Coordinator before thecamper can be registered.
  8. Two weeks prior to each scheduled camp week, review all camper health related forms; follow up with parent(s)/guardians regarding any questions. Note specific issues forCamp Director/staff
  9. Order all medical and health-related supplies that may be required during the camp season
  10. Prepare and update Standing Treatment Orders for physician review and signature
  11. Provide staff training for Universal precautions, basic health and safety issues, and special health-related issues that may arise
  12. Responsible for set up, restocking, and closing nurses’ cabin for the eight week camp season
  13. Be available via phone for consultation with nurse on duty each week.
  14. Assist with Sunday camper registration at least 5 of the 7 weeks of the camp season.
  15. Insure that first aid boxes/packs are available for each family group during the summer season and for off-season usage at camp
  16. Inventory all medical supplies and submit to the Camp Director copy with assigned monetary values
  17. Perform any other duties that may be assigned

Nurse

Minimum qualifications

  1. Registered Nurse with current NYS Licensure and current CPR certification.
Responsible to
Camp Whitman Camp Director Camp Whitman Nursing Coordinator

Job Responsiblilities

  1. Provides routine health screening, assessment, and treatment within scope of practice for Registered Nurses in New York State on a 24 hour basis while camp is in session.
  2. When appointed by the Nursing Coordinator, serves as the designated Health Director for a camp session as stipulated by the NYS DOH.
  3. Ensures that health screening has been completed for all campers during registration at the start of each camp session.
  4. Refers campers and staff requiring medical assessment and/or treatment to the Penn Yan Emergency Department.
  5. Administers prescription, over-the-counter, and prn medications per orders of health care provider for camper/staff members and maintains written documentation of all medications administered, refused, etc..
  6. Maintains required records of health assessments, treatments, medications administered, contact with parents and/or outside health providers as stipulated in the camp safety manual.
  7. Notifies the NYS Child Abuse Hotline immediately of any allegations of sexual abuse or misconduct.
  8. Notifies the NYS Department of Health within 24 hours all injuries or illnesses required to be reported per NYS Department of Health code [see list posted by sink in Nurse Cabin treatment area].
  9. Works in conjunction with Camp Director and the individual weekly camp Directors to plan management of homesickness and other behavioral conditions.
  10. Notifies Camp Director and the individual weekly camp Directors of special medical, emotional, and/or behavioral needs of campers/staff and how these may best be managed.
  11. Notifies the Aquatics Director of any campers /staff with special water sport risk.
  12. Notifies the Head Cook of any campers with special dietary needs.
  13. Individual weekly camp Directors will share this information with their counselors.
  14. Assumes responsibility for sanitation of the Nurse’s Cabin. [Responsibility for sanitation in other parts of the camp are designated to other senior staff members as outlined in the camp safety manual].
